OAKLAND FREEDOM SCHOOL

Hiring Teaching Interns for Summer ‘09
Familiar to some and new to others, Oakland Freedom School is back for another fantastic summer! Come be a part of an ongoing movement to transform the African American community one child at a time.

Leadership Excellence is a non-profit organization that is committed to developing the next generation of leaders who possess the skills and desire to create social change in urban communities. By providing youth with a meaningful role in community problem-solving they will become more socially aware, motivated, and resilient in coping with community, school and family problems.  Leadership Excellence has founded such programs as Camp Akili, Oakland Freedom School, MECCA, SOLO, West Oakland Teen Center, The Bridge. Health Educators and Camp Alkebulan.

Oakland Freedom School is a five-week cultural reading summer program designed to engage children from ages five to thirteen and their interest in reading with a culturally relevant curriculum that reflects African American history and heritage. This school focuses on social action, economic development and conflict resolution. Oakland Freedom School is a loving, learning environment with fun, exciting activities aimed at developing future leaders.

Time Commitment (dates are subject to change):
Training dates (paid)- April 25th, May 16th, May 29th – 31st , June 13th, June 24th – July 3rd            
Program dates- July 6th – Aug. 7th 
Graduation date- Aug. 7th

Salary Range: 
3,000-4,000 April- August

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES, DUTIES AND TASKS:

  • Teach and be responsible for a class of ten to twelve students
  • Document and maintain an awareness of students attendance, progress, attitude, and behavior in class
  • Contacting parents on a regular basis
  • Facilitating Harambee and other site activities
  • Supervising breakfast, lunch, and snack
  • Maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe learning space
  • Assist collaborating consultants, community members, and/or parents
  • Implement African-centered literacy development curriculum
  • Create and turn in on time weekly teaching strategies complete with daily lesson plans, afternoon activities, special projects, field trips, etc.
  • Present on site all day every day of the five week program
  • Attend all training sessions
  • Coordinate and supervise class field trips
  • Implement social action, economic development, conflict resolution activity activities/projects
