An amazing opportunity for high school youth of African descent....
CAMP AKILI 2009
is a 6-day motivational Camp held
Monday, June 15th to Saturday, June 20th
at Westminster Woods in Occidental, CA.
Organized by Leadership Excellence, Camp Akili is designed to offer Black youth, ages 14 -18, the opportunity to critically reflect on the root causes of violence, racism, sexism and unhealthy behaviors in order to make change in our selves and our communities. Through interactive workshops and a fresh multi-media curriculum, Camp Akili instills self esteem, develops, leadership skills, enhances cultural awareness and improves interpersonal relationships as we engaged in Radical Healing!
COST:
- $300 per youth for families, or
- $400 per youth for organizations
- Sibling, group rates and scholarships available. Scholarship Application is attached.
- No One is turned away for lack of funds.
TO SIGN UP:
- REGISTER by completing the Summer 2009 Youth Registration Form attached to this email, and available on our website and/or at our offices (due by June 5, 2009).
- PAY at least $100 as a non refundable deposit to Leadership Excellence as soon as possible. All fees due by June 5th, 2009.
- APPLY for scholarships, (if needed) by completing the Summer 2009 Scholarship Application and sending it to our offices (due by June 5, 2009).
- ORIENTATION - Attend the Parent and Youth Orientation and complete additional forms. Date ad Time to be announced.

CAMP AKILI FACILITIES:
Youth will be bussed to beautiful Westminster Woods in Occidental, CA.- approx 2 1/2 hours north of San Francisco. For the duration of Camp, youth will reside in gender-specific eight-person cabins with one to two adult counselors. Workshops will be held both in Westminster's conference facilities, as well as in the serene outdoors of Westminster Woods. Delicious meals are served in the cafeteria-style Dining Hall, three times per day.
CAMP AKILI STAFF:
Camp Akili utilizes a dynamic group of highly trained college students, experienced youth development professionals, and knowledgeable community activists/organizers who have a passion for empowering African youth. There is 24 hour/day supervision of all youth and firm rules that maintain safety and build community.

Leadership Excellence Inc. is a non-profit organization that trains African-American youth between the ages of 5 to 25 to become leaders in their communities. For the past 20 years, we have been "Educating African-American Youth for Social Change" through grassroots community organizing and leadership skill development. We have developed a series of innovative programs that engage, inspire, empower and transform lives. These include Oakland Freedom School, Camp Akili, S.O.L.O., M.E.C.C.A, Stand For Something/Youth Leadership Program, and Camp Alkebulan.
